MEC urges parents to 'love your children's school'─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 05:48 Tue, 29 Nov 2022
The Northern Cape Department of Education has called on parents and residents to take ownership of the schools in their area by protecting the premises.
The department has initiated the "Love Your School" campaign, which seeks to strengthen relations with school communities.
As part of the campaign that is being launched in various schools across the province, the MEC for Education, Zolile Monakali, visited Boresetse High School in Barkly West on Monday 28 November 2022.
During his address at the school, Monakali called on parents to take care of schools in surrounding areas.
"When we say 'love your school', we are saying we must love the building, protect it. We must keep it safe, we must love our children, we must make sure they come to school, they are getting a meal to eat at the school, they are wearing uniforms.
"We must make sure we love our schools by supporting our teachers through the School Governing Body, working hand in hand to make sure the school is a functional school. There is no functional school without the involvement of the community," he said.
Monakali also expressed his disappointment at the lack of parents' attendance at the school.
"I must voice out my disappointment for the attendance, especially from the parents' side. This school has 1051 learners. If you have 1051 learners, the expectations, the minimum expectations, the parents of those 1051 learners are supposed to be here.
"There is no way you can love your school if you don't love your child," said Monakali.
