'Removing Olly was justified'─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:32 Thu, 01 Oct 2020
The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) in the Mangaung Metro Municipal Council says the alleged arrest of the former embattled mayor of the Metro, Olly Mlamleli, now justifies her removal as the mayor.
This as opposition parties that removed Mlamleli in August by means of a secret ballot, reacts to her arrest by the Hawks on Wednesday because of her links to the R255 million asbestos project during her tenure as the MEC of Human Settlements.
The FF Plus caucus leader, Elizabeth Synman Van Deventer, says it is necessary that not only officials are held accountable, but politicians as well.
DA member of the Legislature, Leona Kleynhans, says in their court action in July 2015, the party tried to stop payments on the asbestos contract and Mlamleli assured the court that she would ensure that no payments would be made until the Judge had ruled on the urgency of the matter.
Mlamleli is one of the six suspects, which include the businessman Edwin Sodi, former Free State HOD of Human Settlements, Nthimotse Mokhesi, and former national Human Settlements director-general, Thabane Zulu, who were arrested over the controversial R255 million asbestos project.
Following the arrests, the Free State ANC's spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, told OFM News that the party noted developments from the State Capture Commission and, as a result, the party would convene an urgent meeting on Wednesday. He said one of the issues set to be discussed or looked into was the implications in relation to the recent ANC resolutions in matters of corruption.
Meanwhile, in August, 31 councillors voted for Mlamleli’s removal while 28 opposed it, and 8 spoiled their votes. The DA's Mokgadi Kganakga previously told OFM News that the financial crisis of the metro went from bad to worse since the appointment of Mlamleli, with the total debt to various service providers increasing to R6.5 billion.
