The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel has been confirmed as the new England coach.

The 51-year-old from Germany was named as Gareth Southgate’s successor this morning. He became just the third non-English coach of the Three Lions. The others are the late Sven-Goran Eriksson of Sweden and Fabio Capello of Italy.

Following their defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 in July, Southgate stepped down as the England manager after a highly successful spell in charge. Lee Carsley has acted as the interim coach. Anthony Barry will serve as Tuchel’s assistant coach.

Tuchel said being named as the new England coach is very special for him due to his connection to English football because of his tenure at the London-based Chelsea.

“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.

”To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting. Working closely with Anthony Barry as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud.

“I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark (Bullingham) and John (McDermott), for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.” Tuchel who also coached Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain will begin his tenure in January 2025.
