The former Grey College teacher and Media24 mentor to aspiring young journalists, Willem Breytenbach, is making representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regarding the future of the sexual assault charges he faces.

The contents of the representations were not revealed in the brief Cape Town Regional Court sitting to postpone the matter.

Representations to the NPA by people accused of a crime, were typically a bid to ask the prosecutor to reconsider whether a matter should go to trial.

Breytenbach's charges stem from an investigation conducted and broadcast in a podcast by one of his alleged victims, Deon Wiggett, called My Only Story.

Breytenbach was arrested in December 2019, after he had locked up his business and home in Cape Town and took refuge at his mother's residence outside Mossel Bay.

He drives to Cape Town for each court appearance, and typically sits by himself in the passage while he waits for his case to be called up.

Breytenbach had not pleaded yet to the 16 charges he faces. There are nine complainants, including Wiggett.

Willem Breytenbach, the former teacher and journalist who is accused of sexual abuse by several men, is facing more charges, the Cape Town Magistrate's Court heard on Tuesday. Breytenbach will now face six charges of indecent assault, and one of sexual assault.

In Wiggett's case, there are eight charges of indecent assault and crimen injuria. In the other eight cases, the charges include sexual assault, crimen injuria and indecent assault.

After a long wait for his case to be called due to the court's heavy caseload, Breytenbach was in the dock for a few minutes before the matter was postponed again to give the NPA time to consider the representations.

He was expected to return to court on 11 May.
