Service delivery restored to Free State farming town after months of turmoil─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:37 Thu, 21 Nov 2024
Moqhaka Municipality has confirmed services have been restored in Steynsrus after months of disruption stemming from community protests over alleged nepotism and corruption.
The community of the small northern Free State town was left without essential services for at least six months after protests intensified over a two-month period earlier this year. Residents accused the Kroonstad-based municipality of favouritism when it hired more than a hundred workers in December last year, a process that reportedly excluded some councillors, fueling allegations of irregularities.
The demonstrations began in January and escalated to the point where water and electricity supplies were severely affected. Schools were forced to close while businesses already struggling with economic challenges and loadshedding faced additional strain due to prolonged closures.
Despite the community’s outcry, their grievances initially went unheard, leading to heightened tensions.
Municipal spokesperson Dika Kheswa told OFM News he couldn’t comment on the hiring controversy as the matter was before the courts. “About 150 employees (had been) hired by the municipality in December 2023, and … concerns (were) raised about how the process was handled.”
He assured residents services in Steynsrus are back on track, thanks to interventions from the Free State premier. “Service delivery in Steynsrus was hampered for six to seven months.
“The premier intervened, visiting the area and engaging with residents. I can confirm that municipal employees in Steynsrus are now working at full capacity, and services are being rendered.“
“The community has expressed their appreciation for the resumption of services while they wait for the final resolution of the issues,” Kheswa said.
