Residents of Moretele cut off after heavy floods─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:21 Wed, 09 Nov 2022
Residents of the Moretele Local Municipality in the North West have been cut off following heavy rains on Tuesday 8 November 2022, which resulted in serious floods.
According to the spokesperson of the municipality, Mothupi Malebye, residents have been left destitute.
Malebye says a house has collapsed in Bosplaas but no one has been reported injured thus far. He adds that learners were also evacuated from their school in Kroomkruil following the heavy floods on Tuesday. Malebye says this was the worst flooding experienced in a decade - it has cut many people off from work and school. He adds the mayor of the Moretele Local Municipality deployed a task team to assess affected areas, including Mmotla, KroomKuil, Makapanstad, Potoane, and Carousel View, amongst others.
Malebye also adds that the mayor has convened the local command council, comprising of multi-stakeholders, including Sassa, Social Development, and Public Works.
Meanwhile a wall of the Paardekraal Dam, next to Sibanye Stillwater mine outside Rustenburg, North West, also collapsed on Tuesday due to heavy rains.
