Students concerned despite suggested solutions at NSFAS summit─── 15:02 Tue, 28 Jun 2022
Even though Free State students’ accommodation issues are being addressed at a two-day summit, many students remain unhappy as they feel the summit does not address the many prevalent NSFAS issues.
The summit at the CUT Free State campus in Bloemfontein, organised by NSFAS for Monday and Tuesday, mainly addressed accommodation issues. Other issues include the abrupt loss of funding some students experience, as well as alleged inadequate academic advice that also results in the loss of funding.
Amanda*, a student at the University of the Free State (UFS), told OFM News that NSFAS did not continue to cover her studies, despite initially having applied for a four-year course and covering her first year of studies. She did not fail the first year.
Meanwhile, a member of the UFS Student Representative Council (SRC), Kekeletso Mabuya, told OFM News that she hopes the summit will implement some of the suggestions made by landlords, universities, and colleges to rectify the current crisis of student accommodation and that it won't be used as just another box-ticking event.

On many platforms, students said they could not afford to attend the summit as the price of R1500 was too expensive.
