Centlec is losing millions | News Article

Centlec in Bloemfontein says copper cable theft negatively impacts their pockets and contributes to power outages. This is after nearly a ton of copper cables were seized by police at a scrap metal dealership in Bloemfontein, Free State, yesterday.

Centlec were also called to the premises and identified 600 kilograms of the copper cable belonging to it. It is further said that the owner of the dealership was not available during the raid and is still at large. The police took in the workers for questioning and later released them. It is suggested that the copper cables were going to be transported to Johannesburg in Gauteng when the police intercepted.

Centlec spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, says it goes to show that the copper cable thieves are working with scrap metal dealerships in these criminal activities. He also adds that they will be monitoring the case closely to ensure that the suspects involved are arrested and receive a suitable punishment. Meanwhile, in Welkom yesterday, the residents of Bronville were protesting following power outages due to copper cable theft.
