The Northern Cape traffic department has strengthened its road traffic law enforcement efforts by introducing 16 newly qualified provincial traffic inspectors.

They’re set to start their duties on Monday (13/1) as part of the province’s commitment to maintain order on its roads.

The 16 recruits were among 50 traffic trainees enrolled at the Matjhabeng Traffic Training Academy in Welkom last year. They successfully completed the Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement (NQF Level 4), which includes 20 unit standards.

The new inspectors will be deployed to ten traffic departments across the province, said Coghsta spokesperson Tebogo Monyo.

MEC Bentley Vass welcomed the new inspectors, urging them to serve with professionalism and dedication. “We are happy to have an additional 16 provincial traffic inspectors on our roads to help us maintain law and order for all modes of transport by providing quality traffic policing services, as stipulated by the relevant legislation.”

Vass announced plans to further bolster the department’s capacity by March with 25 more inspectors to be appointed following an open recruitment process.

Meanwhile, 32 trainees from the 2024 intake who did not meet all the qualification standards will undergo a remedial programme, including the final integrated summative assessment, to complete their certification in the first half of the year.

In 2022, the province welcomed 2,940 new police members who were trained at the 3SAI battalion’s military base in Kimberley. They were deployed to different police stations for further training to help deal with crime in the province.
