The department received 24,213 applications for Grades R, 1, and 8, said Provincial Education spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe. Approximately 99% of learners have been placed. The online admissions system is open from 8–14 January to accommodate late applications.

“Our admissions team is working tirelessly to ensure that all remaining learners are placed before schools reopen on 15 January,” said Van der Merwe.

He said in preparation for the new school year, schools were given the option to procure learning and teaching support materials either centrally or directly from suppliers. A total of 350 schools chose the central procurement option, with delivery standing at 90.88%.

Van der Merwe acknowledged some delays in disbursing norms and standards allocations due to budget constraints but reassured stakeholders that funds have been secured through collaboration with the premier and provincial treasury.

“These funds will be utilised to procure stationery, additional learning materials, services to schools, learning aids for special schools, and hostel subsidies,” he explained.

The department has also ensured that all 504 learner transport routes across the province are operational as schools reopen. Transport provided by 249 service providers across all five districts makes provision for 28,307 learners.

“We urge members of the public to report any challenges related to learner transport in their communities,” Van der Merwe said.

To ensure a smooth start to the school year, MPs, the Northern Cape Executive Council, the National Council of Provinces, the Provincial Legislature, and local mayors and councillors are expected to visit schools across the province on Wednesday to monitor their reopening.
