ANC Secretary General and former Free State premier, Ace Magashule, will be in his home province as of tomorrow to engage communities in the province.
His visit is part of the ANC campaign trail ahead of the much-anticipated May 8 elections. He will conduct door to door visits and hold a community meeting in QwaQwa on Friday and then proceed to Botshabelo on Saturday. Magashule's visit to the province comes a week after ANC chair, Gwede Mantashe, embarked on a campaign trail in the town of Kathu, in the Northern Cape, while Deputy President, David Mabuza, visited the Taung area in the North West. With less than two months to the general elections, the ANC is sending out its ‘heavy weights’ to the different regions to strengthen their support base.
Service delivery issues, high unemployment rates and ANC divisions within the troubled Maluti-A-Phofung are set to come under the spotlight during Magashule's visit.
The Maluti-A-Phofung currently owes Eskom more that R2.8 billion and is ranked as the municipality with the highest debt owed to the power utility.
It recently made headlines over ANC vs ANC court battles when the provincial structure was dragged to court over the suspension of 16 councillors who allegedly rebelled against the Free State ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and voted with the opposition to elect Gilbert Mokotso as the mayor of Maluti. The case was, however, dismissed by the Free State High Court.
Judge Johannes Petrus Daffue, on February the 14th, expressed concerns about the actions of the legal counsel representing the applicants after Advocate Kameel Magan and the attorney, Dexter Selepe, failed to make the drive from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein due to Magan’s alleged sudden illness. Daffue alluded that he saw no prospect of the applicants emerging victorious from the case from the onset. This was further highlighted by the legal counsel’s failure to submit a written responding affidavit as well as the heads of argument within the agreed time period.
Following this, all eyes will be on Magashule and how he addresses questions regarding the lack of service delivery and divisions within the municipality.
