The police have managed to maintain order at President Brand Street in Bloemfontein in the Free State amidst a protest by the Central University of Technology (CUT) students over unpaid NSFAS allowances.

The police have also instructed the irate students to clear off the road and desist from shutting the road and further threatened to arrest them immediately.

Motorists have been prevented from using the road as students protest for unpaid NSFAS allowances which include food, books and accommodation. A large contingent of them has now gone outside the main campus to shut down the road after also shutting down the campus and disrupting classes.

Despite the heavy presence of police and campus security, students are able to run amok inside and outside of the campus.

OFM News previously reported that the Deputy President of Student Representative Council (SRC), Tshegofatso Mojanaga, said that if their demands are not met by the management the academic programmes will not continue.

The situation at the campus this morning was volatile as students went on a rampage - burning tyres and refuse and also barricading the entrance gates to the university.

Students allege that they have not received allowances for food, books and accommodation. Those who received the accommodation says that they only received a mere R700 which they say is not enough.

No arrests or injuries have been reported since this morning.
