SIU probe reveals how senior Eskom officials ‘fleeced’ power utility | News Article

The head of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Advocate Andy Mothibi, has revealed the modus operandi used by Eskom officials when defrauding the struggling power utility.

The SIU appeared before the Standing Committee into Public Accounts on Wednesday.

Mothibi said the officials, who are normally part of the senior management team, would approach complete strangers to set up subcontractors and bank accounts to which they can channel funds.

He told MPs these subcontractors are normally registered on Eskom's vendor database.

"This is a deliberate scheme used by the officials in terms of fleecing Eskom.

"These links can only be identified through a review of bank accounts, email communications, extensive email search and communication. Cell phone records that were analysed and other methods that we have used."

The SIU investigation also uncovered how Eskom vendors pay kickback through the officials "indirectly", further complicating the process.

"There's another way that they hide this kind of payment by paying the creditors of the officials directly. In other instances we have found that payments are paid to officials throughout the child's school directly or paying service providers and suppliers directly,” added Mothibi.

"The investigations we have uncovered and the organised crimes that are at Eskom. The schemes and collusion between Eskom officials at various levels, especially senior officials. We are glad that there is consequence management and we should not relent in ensuring that they are held to account."
