The Human Rights Commission’s (HRC) hearings of the Gauteng leg of the July 2021 unrest will on Tuesday hear evidence from SANDF chief General Rudzani Maphwanya.

The commission rescheduled his appearance after he didn’t arrive to testify last Wednesday. This is after the SANDF cited communication challenges on its part.

On Monday, the CEO of Business Unity South Africa, Cas Coovadia, told the commission many lessons had been learned from the July unrest.

The unrest claimed more than 350 lives and caused damages worth over R50 billion to businesses and infrastructure in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Coovadia explains, “I think it’s a political problem that caused the unrest in July so we need to be aware of what’s happening in business and so we need to be getting on top of what’s happening in business and that is one lesson. The second critical lesson is that the July incidents manifested very clearly how our intelligence and security infrastructure has shown lapses. The lesson that we’ve got to learn is that we need very, very good security infrastructure.”
