Eskom welcomes proposals for other power sources─── 10:51 Tue, 16 Mar 2021
Eskom executives say their maintenance plan will lead to a shortfall of power generation for at least five years.
CEO André de Ruyter said the utility welcomes proposals for other power sources to add to the country's energy mix.
"Eskom has to reiterate there will be a shortfall in the supply of electricity of approximately 4,000 megawatts over the next five years as President Cyril Ramaphosa announced in his State of the Nation Address," De Ruyter said.
"We welcome further intervention announced by the president which will include a request for proposals for 2,600 megawatts from wind and solar energy as part of Bid Window 5."
De Ruyter said Eskom is looking forward to continue collaborating with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, as well as the Independent Power Producer (IPP) Office, to enable an accelerated execution to bring additional generation capacity onto the grid in the shortest space of time possible.
In September last year, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe started the process of adding new electricity to the grid.
The gazetted approval opened the bidding process for new power producers.
