Smokers in the Western Cape are breathing a sigh of relief.
The Western Cape government has eased the ban on the sale of cigarettes.
Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities David Maynier says his department has been in contact with national government and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape for clarity on the regulations for lockdown.
“Cigarettes may be sold during the lockdown, but only together with essential goods,” said the Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities in a statement.
The sales of cigarettes were prohibited when the 21-day lockdown came into effect.
Alcohol has also been banned.
These were the measure announced by government to curb the spread of COVID-19.
