He won the OFM O-dition presenter search in March 2023 and went from working as a frozen foods packer in Klerksdorp to moving to Bloemfontein and starting a new career as a production assistant and voiceover artist at OFM.

According to Michael, his life has definitely improved since he won the presenter search. “I didn’t think I would win! I was just looking for an opportunity. The O-dition has changed everything. It has put me in a position to look after the people in my life. I have learnt a lot by being mentored by others and being surrounded by creative people at OFM. It is eye-opening to see what goes on behind the scenes at a radio station. I’ve also had the opportunity to apply the knowledge I already gained from my hobby, which is music production. I would say working at OFM has sharpened all my skills.”

Michael not only started a new job and moved to a new city in 2023, but he also got engaged and became the proud father to a little girl. “It felt like everything was falling into place. Moving to Bloemfontein has felt like starting a new chapter in my life journey.”

OFM programming manager, Tim Thabethe, says: “Before January 2023, Michael had no committed thought toward a radio career. One year later, Michael is one of the voices that you will hear on OFM and one of the cogs in the wheel that turns OFM, the Sound of Your Life. It is always good to see a person live out their passion and we are proud to have enabled this for him.”    

OFM embarked on the O-ditions not only to find someone to mentor but also to change a life… and it ended up changing three lives. From this campaign came not only Michael but also Ashmund Martin and Anny Bruyns, both of whom are now presenters at OFM.

Van kleinhandel tot radio

Michael Ndabandaba kan daarvoor vergewe word dat hy verlede jaar gedink het sy lewe het die “fast-forward”-knoppie gedruk. Hy het in Maart 2023 die OFM O-disie aanbiedersoektog gewen en het as ’n bevrorekosverpakker in Klerksdorp, na Bloemfontein verhuis en ’n nuwe loopbaan as ’n produksie-assistent en stemkunstenaar by OFM begin.

Volgens Michael het sy lewe beslis verbeter sedert hy die aanbiedersoektog gewen het. “Ek het nie gedink ek sou wen nie! Ek het net ’n geleentheid gesoek. Die O-disie het alles verander. Dit het my in ’n posisie geplaas om na die mense in my lewe om te sien. Ek het baie geleer van mentors en kreatiewe mense wat my by OFM omring het. Dit is ’n belewenis om te sien wat agter die skerms by ’n radiostasie aangaan. Ek het ook die geleentheid gehad om die kennis wat ek reeds danksy my stokperdjie opgedoen het – wat musiekproduksie is – toe te pas. Ek sou sê om by OFM te werk het al my vaardighede opgeskerp.”

Michael het nie net ’n nuwe werk begin en in 2023 na ’n nuwe stad verhuis nie, hy het ook verloof geraak en die trotse pa van ’n dogtertjie geword. “Dit het gevoel asof alles in plek val. Om na Bloemfontein te verhuis het gevoel soos om ’n nuwe hoofstuk in my lewensreis te begin.”

OFM-programbestuurder, Tim Thabethe, sê: “Voor Januarie 2023 het Michael nie aan ’n radioloopbaan gedink nie. ’n Jaar later is Michael een van die stemme wat jy op OFM gaan hoor en een van die ratte in die wiel wat OFM, die Klank van Jou Lewe, laat draai. Dit is altyd goed om te sien hoe iemand sy passie uitleef en ons is trots daarop om dit vir hom moontlik te kan maak.”

OFM het die O-disie aangepak nie net om iemand te vind om te mentor nie, maar ook om ’n lewe te verander ... en dit het uiteindelik drie lewens verander. Hierdie veldtog het nie net vir Michael opgelewer nie, maar ook Ashmund Martin en Anny Bruyns, wat nou albei aanbieders by OFM is.
