Law enforcement agencies in North West have joined forces to enhance safety and security ahead of the State of the Province Address (Sopa).

Expectations are high as Premier Lazarus Mokgorosi prepares to deliver his second Sopa in the Provincial Legislature in Mmabatho on Thursday (27/2) at 10:00, outlining the government’s achievements and priorities.

The provincial joint operational and intelligence divisions, led by the police, are ready to ensure a safe and secure environment, said provincial police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone.

Law enforcement officers will be strategically deployed in and around the legislature to ensure safety in Mmabatho and Mahikeng. While routine activities will not be significantly disrupted, some road closures and access restrictions will be in effect.

“It must be emphasised that civil servants working at neighbouring government buildings will still be allowed to access their offices,” Mokgwabone said.

Road Closures

Roads affected by the security measures include:

  • Sekame Street and Ngaka Modiri Molema Road
  • Sekame Street and Dr James Moroka Drive
  • Dr James Moroka Drive and Hector Peterson Street
  • Dr James Moroka Drive and Stadium Road
  • Dr Albert Luthuli Road and Ngaka Modiri Molema Road

The closures will be in place between 05:00 and 15:00 on Thursday.

Mokgwabone appealed for cooperation from the public, including civil servants, learners, and residents who typically use these routes or access offices in the area.

He emphasised the importance of adhering to security arrangements and following the guidance of law enforcement officials during the event.
