John Walland lends sports prowess to OFM─── 15:32 Wed, 03 May 2023
Central South Africa has lately been waking up to one of the country’s most-loved radio voices. Veteran presenter John Walland is now heard on OFM as a sports anchor during The Good Morning Breakfast show, weekdays 06:00 – 09:00.
This South African Radio Awards-winning content producer and sports presenter is well-known to the industry, having joined 5fm in 1989. John was also appointed Sports Anchor on SABC 2’s AM Today TV Breakfast Show in 1999 and has appeared on M Net’s Super Saturday as a Sports Show Participant. John left 5fm, joined 94.7 Highveld Stereo in 2003 and moved on to Jacaranda FM in 2008. He joined HOT 91.9 FM in 2014.
Furthermore, John is a keen sportsman and has completed numerous Comrades, Two Oceans, London and New York Marathons, as well as Iron Man Triathlons and Cape Cycle tours.
John was fortunate to have interviewed our late, former president Nelson Mandela during his tenure and this has since become his favourite quote from that goosebump moment.

Sentraal-Suid-Afrika het die afgelope tyd wakker geword met een van die land se mees geliefde radiostemme. Die veteraan-aanbieder John Walland word nou op OFM gehoor as sportleser tydens The Good Morning Breakfast show, weeksdae 06:00 – 09:00.
Hierdie Suid-Afrikaanse Radio-toekenning-bekroonde inhoudvervaardiger en sportaanbieder is welbekend aan die bedryf, nadat hy in 1989 by 5fm aangesluit het. John is ook in 1999 as sport aanbieder op SABC 2 se AM Today TV-ontbytprogram aangestel en het op M-Net se Super Saterdag verskyn as 'n sportprogramdeelnemer. John het 5fm verlaat en in 2003 by 94.7 Highveld Stereo aangesluit en in 2008 geskuif na Jacaranda FM. Hy het in 2014 by HOT 91.9 FM aangesluit.
Verder is John 'n kranige sportman en het hy al talle maratonne voltooi, soos die Comrades, Two Oceans, Londen- en New York-maratonne, asook Iron Man se driekamp en Cape Cycle se fietswedrenne.
John was gelukkig om tydens oorlede oudpresident Nelson Mandela se ampstermyn ‘n onderhoud met hom te voer, en ‘n aanhaling uit daardie hoendervleis-oomblik het sedertdien sy gunsteling geword.
“Sport het die mag om die wêreld te verander. Dit het die krag om te inspireer. Dit het die krag om mense te verenig op 'n manier wat min ander dinge doen. Dit praat met die jeug in 'n taal wat hulle verstaan. Sport kan hoop skep waar daar eens net wanhoop was.”
OFM-programbestuurder, Tim Thabethe, sê: "Die insluiting van John Walland by die OFM-span en op die Good Morning Breakfast is 'n absolute voorreg. John is 'n legende binne sport- en radiokringe.
