Piastri wins in Shanghai for a McLaren one-two─── MORGAN PIEK 10:56 Sun, 23 Mar 2025

The 23-year-old Australian driver, Oscar Piastri, has won his first Formula 1 race of the season on Sunday by taking the chequered flag at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.
Piastri, who started from pole position, led from start to finish as his team, McLaren, claimed a one-two finish. Lando Norris, the winner of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne a week earlier, secured second place this time around. This marks a third consecutive victory for McLaren, following Norris’ win at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December.
George Russell of Mercedes-Benz did enough to secure third place, holding off defending F1 World Champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

Piastri won the largely incident-free race in a time of 1:30:55.026, claiming the third F1 victory of his career. Norris, who is considered a strong contender to dethrone Verstappen, finished 9.748 seconds behind, while Russell was 11.097 seconds slower than the Australian.
With just a few laps remaining, Verstappen overtook Charles Leclerc to move up into fourth, pushing Ferrari back into fifth. Leclerc was the top finisher for the Italian manufacturer, while his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, crossed the line in sixth.

Following his victory, Piastri expressed his delight at how well the weekend had gone and praised his team’s efforts. "It's been an incredible weekend from start to finish. The car has been pretty mega the whole time,” said Piastri.
“I think today was a bit of a surprise with how differently the tyres behaved. But no, super happy, just proud of the whole weekend.
“I think on the medium tyres, it was still a bit tricky, but much better than yesterday, and the hard tyres performed much better than expected – certainly better than we expected. So, yeah, to go all the way to the end like that was a bit of a surprise, but a happy one.”

“We managed to pull it off. It wasn't an easy race going in, but I’m just proud of the whole team and the weekend.”
The only driver who failed to finish on Sunday was former World Champion Fernando Alonso, whose Aston Martin retired after just four laps due to brake issues. The next stop on the calendar will be in a fortnight when the drivers and teams assemble at Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix.
