Lando Norris and McLaren have made a strong statement in the new Formula 1 season by winning a dramatic season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on Sunday.

Norris, who secured pole position after setting the fastest qualifying time, led from start to finish to fend off reigning four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

The wet conditions at Albert Park played havoc with the race, leading to six drivers failing to finish, including seasoned veterans Carlos Sainz of Williams and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin. Mclaren were looking good for a double podium, however, late in the race Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri spun off the track resulting in him dropping from second to ninth.

McLaren’s Norris took the chequered flag in 1:42:06.304 after 57 gruelling laps, edging out Verstappen by just 0.895 seconds. George Russell of Mercedes claimed the final podium spot, finishing 8.481 seconds behind Norris. Charles Leclerc was the first Ferrari driver to cross the finish line, 19.826 seconds off the pace, while his teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, could only manage tenth place.

Following his season-opening victory, the 25-year-old Norris admitted it was a tough challenge, particularly holding off Verstappen in the tricky conditions.

“It was amazing – a tough race, especially with Max behind me,” Norris said. “I was pushing, especially in the last two laps. It was a little stressful, I’m not going to lie. But an amazing way to start the year.

“A tough one, because we went off and made some big mistakes. I went through the gravel, picked up a lot of damage. Just tricky conditions, but these are the ones that are enjoyable, fun, and unpredictable.

“But this time, we got it right and ended up on top, so I’m very happy.”

There will be little rest for the teams and drivers as they now head to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday.
