The world of Formula 1 is mourning the loss of one of its most charismatic and influential figures, Eddie Jordan, who has passed away at the age of 76.

The Irishman, known for his larger-than-life personality and immense contributions to motorsport, died on Thursday after a battle with cancer.

Jordan’s career spanned decades, during which he made an indelible mark on Formula 1 as a driver, team owner, and businessman. Jordan was the visionary who founded Jordan Grand Prix, the team that played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous F1 legends.

Most notably, he was the man who gave Michael Schumacher his debut in the sport in 1991. Schumacher would go on to become one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, securing an astonishing seven World Championship titles, 91 race wins, and 155 podium finishes.

Beyond Schumacher, Jordan’s team provided a launchpad for several other F1 greats, including Rubens Barrichello, Martin Brundle, Damon Hill, and Jean Alesi. Under his leadership, Jordan Grand Prix was known for its underdog spirit, often punching above its weight and delivering memorable performances on the track.

Even after selling his team in the early 2000s, Jordan remained a key figure in the world of motorsport. His deep understanding of the sport and sharp business acumen kept him involved in various aspects of Formula 1, from broadcasting to behind-the-scenes negotiations.

More recently, Jordan found himself in the headlines for his involvement in a controversial and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to sell a stake in SA Rugby’s commercial rights to Ackerley Sports Group. The move sparked debate in South African sporting circles but demonstrated Jordan’s continued interest in high-level sports business.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali led the tributes to Jordan, remembering him as a true giant of the sport.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of Eddie Jordan’s sudden passing,” said Domenicali. “With his boundless energy, he always knew how to make people smile, remaining genuine and brilliant at all times.

End of an era

“Eddie was a key figure in an era of Formula 1, and he will be deeply missed. In this moment of sorrow, my thoughts and those of the entire Formula 1 family are with his loved ones.”

Jordan’s death marks the end of an era for Formula 1, but his legacy will live on in the countless drivers he mentored, the thrilling races he orchestrated, and the enduring passion he brought to the sport.

There is no doubt that this week’s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai will be attributed to the late legend of the sport.
