Placed 9th with less than 200 meters to go to the finish line, Caster Semenya hit the gas too late for gold glory, but done enough for bronze.

Caster Semenya claimed South Africa’s third medal of World Championships in London, taking bronze in yesterday’s women’s 1500m in a time of 4:02.90.

It was the is the first time the 800m Olympic champion has tackled the 1500m event at international level and her lack of experience was evident as the Polokwane born athlete found herself in 9th position with less than 300 meters to go.

Semenya hit the accelerator to make up an impressive 6 spots before the finish line, pipping home favorite Laura Muir by a hair to claim the bronze.

Kenya’s Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon won the gold in 4:02.59 with American Jennifer Simpson taking the silver 4:02.76.
