The Proteas netball team ended their year on a high note on Saturday by being crowned Champions of Africa after winning the Africa Netball Cup in Swakopmund, Namibia.

In a hard-fought but commanding performance, the South African women's netball team defeated Uganda 65-50 in the final at the Dome. The victory marked yet another milestone in their impressive campaign.

South Africa started strong, leading the first quarter 16-12. They then extended their advantage to 30-24 by halftime, showcasing a solid and disciplined performance.

As expected, the Proteas shifted into higher gear during the third quarter, a period that has often been their trademark. This strategic surge saw them pull ahead to a commanding 50-33 lead. Although Uganda mounted a spirited fightback in the final 15 minutes, the damage had already been done. South Africa managed to hold their ground, securing a convincing 15-goal victory to claim the title.

The Proteas head coach, Jenny van Dyk, still unbeaten since taking the helm, expressed her pride in the team's achievement and their continued growth.

“I'm a very happy coach. The players made us proud today.”

“What the team accomplished was one of our key goals: to be crowned African champions. Our third quarter was particularly massive, scoring 20 goals to their 9, which proved crucial in securing the win. It was a very tough week, with intense physical matches and challenging conditions, but the players delivered.”

Adding to the celebration, the South African men's netball team also defended their title successfully. They defeated Eswatini 60-39 after establishing a solid 32-23 lead at halftime.

Both victories reflect the growing strength and depth of South African netball, as the teams continue to raise the bar on the continental stage.
