A young farmer is reshaping the agricultural landscape by combining his passion for smart agriculture with a profound commitment to soil conservation and empowering emerging farmers.

Ziphezinhle Gabuza, fondly known as Boyzie, recalls his remarkable journey from the Future Farmers Foundation to his current role which exemplifies the transformative power of education, exposure, and innovation in agriculture.

‘It propelled him to the forefront of agricultural innovation’

His passion for agriculture was ignited in the classrooms of Vryheid Landbou High School in KwaZulu-Natal by the Future Farmers Foundation. Founder Judy Stewart said this organisation strives to equip young individuals with the skills needed to excel in the agricultural domain. Gabuza’s decision to join the Future Farmers Foundation after completing high school marked the beginning of a journey that would propel him to the forefront of agricultural innovation.

Following his studies at the University of Free State, Gabuza's trajectory led him to Australia, where he immersed himself in the intricacies of farming under the mentorship of Colin Greenfield. There Gabuza was responsible for overseeing three expansive stations, collectively larger than the Netherlands, and managed a sizable population of 15,000 Merino sheep and 10,000 Shorthorn cattle. 

The vastness of the Australian Outback became a canvas for inspiration, instilling in him a vision to find innovative solutions for emerging farmers upon his return to South Africa.

Back on home soil, Gabuza found himself at the intersection of traditional farming and cutting-edge technology. Soon, he assumed the role of drone operator for the Sernick Group.

Gabuza's role extends beyond piloting drones –  he collaborates with the software team to develop groundbreaking applications. The team is also exploring the use of drones for rural security to combat the prevalent issue of stock theft in South Africa.

For aspiring farmers, Gabuza's journey offers a roadmap to success. His advice echoes the importance of continuous learning, upskilling, and embracing creativity. In a rapidly evolving agricultural landscape, maintaining an open mind and fostering connections within the farming community are the keys to success.
