The MEC of Agriculture in the Free State, Thembeni Nxangisa, met with members of the Vrede Integrated Dairy Trust in the Phumelela Local Municipality this week. The department explains that the meeting aimed to pave a way forward towards harmonising and sustaining the working relationship between relevant key stakeholders. This meeting follows after the Vrede Dairy project made headlines when investigations revealed that the millions of rands that were allocated to the project were allegedly looted by, amongst others, the Gupta family. Meanwhile, OFM News reported in January that Nxangisa and the Premier of the province, Sisi Ntombela, handed the Vrede Dairy project over to 65 beneficiaries after years of waiting.

Preliminary insights suggest that South Africa could experience another good summer season. However, Wandile Sihlobo, the chief economist at Agbiz, says that they fear the extreme rains and heat observed in the northern hemisphere could be a reality in South Africa too. He adds that South Africa's Crop Estimates Committee is scheduled to release the data containing farmers' intentions to plant for the 2022/23 season on 26 October.
