Study: SA wants to immunise 500 000 health workers─── 09:32 Thu, 11 Feb 2021
South Africa reportedly aims to immunise 350 000 to 500 000 health workers with Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine in an “implementation study”.
President of the South African Medical Research Council, Professor Glenda Gray, says SA expects to get around 80 000 doses every seven to 14 days for the study, once it's approved.
Gray, who is co-lead investigator on the local leg of the Johnson & Johnson global trial, said the implementation study aims to further evaluate the vaccine. J&J’s vaccine has already been tested in the global phase III trial involving more than 40 000 participants including over 6 000 in South Africa.
The government recently paused the rollout of 1 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine and switched to the J&J shot after a clinical trial showed the AstraZeneca shot wasn't as effective against the variant first detected in South Africa.
