Eskom’s countdown to compliance to update your prepaid meter─── 12:06 Tue, 22 Oct 2024
All electricity meters in South Africa now feature a new set of vending codes that ensure the meter’s key change code does not expire.
In accordance with the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA), Eskom is urging prepaid electricity customers to recode their meters by (24/11). Eskom has confirmed that the deadline for updating the Token Identifier (TID) will not be extended, and meters will stop accepting electricity tokens after this date unless they have been upgraded to Key Revision Number (KRN) 2.
Ninety-seven percent of the meters have already been pre-coded by Eskom, allowing customers to complete the procedure easily on their own. This step is essential to prevent service interruptions.

To finish this do-it-yourself process, customers must purchase a credit token from any authorized vendor. They will receive two sets of 20-digit numbers to enter into their meters for the update.
It is highly recommended that those who have not yet recoded their meters take immediate action.
Centlec is currently implementing this project in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality and other areas where they provide services. Customers will not be charged for the implementation of this change.
Customers will receive three tokens with their initial transaction, which must be entered into the meter in the order they appear on the receipt to update the TID memory. Once all three tokens have been submitted, the meter will load the customer’s credit, completing the update.
After this procedure, customers can continue making regular token purchases and inserting, as the three initial tokens are only required to initiate the upgrade.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that all tokens purchased before the firmware update are loaded onto the meter. Once the update is complete, the meter will no longer accept tokens bought before the upgrade.
