Wagyu auction nets nearly R10-million─── SABRINA DEAN 16:14 Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Arlington - Two red Wagyu bulls fetched more than R1-million between them during an auction at Woodview Farm in the Free State at the weekend.
Woodview's Brian Angus says there were a total of 39 animals on offer, with the average lot price coming in at R240 000 per animal for a total turnover just shy of R10-million.
“We had 39 animals on offer. The most expensive were two red Wagyu bulls, which sold for R520 000 each. Then the heifers – we sold red heifers for R410 000 each. The top Wagyu cow was R360 000 and then we sold open heifers for R200 000 each.
“So it was just an enormous sale.”
Angus says the auction results were beyond his wildest dreams and bode well for the future of the breed in South Africa.
Wagyu cattle originated as plough oxen in Japan and are nowadays prized for their heavily marbled, high quality meat.
