Apartheid-era former Foreign Affairs Minister Pik Botha has died. Botha died at his home in Pretoria last night. He was 86-years old.
Botha, was born 27 April 1932, and served as foreign affairs minister in the last years of the apartheid government and served as minister of mineral and energy affairs under Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first democratically elected president.
Botha retired from politics in 1996 when the National Party withdrew from the government of national unity.
In 2000, he announced that he would join the African National Congress. He was considered a liberal – at least in comparison to others in the ruling National Party and among the Afrikaner community – but the bulk of his career was spent defending South Africa's apartheid system of racial segregation against foreign criticism.
The announcement of his death has just been released, and more information will follow.
