The victims of last week’s fatal bus accident in Qacha’s Nek in Lesotho are still recovering in various hospitals in South Africa this week.

The accident, which occurred on Friday, September 28, claimed the lives of nine people, including one person from New Zealand. The accident also left a number of people seriously injured, two of whom are also New Zealand citizens.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Moatshe Ngoepe, told OFM News the driver of the bus, George Themba, allegedly lost control of the bus and overturned in the Qacha’s Nek region in Lesotho.

Themba is believed to have fled the scene and was later apprehended by local police in Limpopo, attempting to cross into Zimbabwe. OFM News reports that the spokesperson of Mediclinic in Bloemfontein, Barbara Steenkamp, has confirmed three people who were involved in last week’s accident are recovering at the hospital.

Steenkamp says they have declined having their names released. She says they have each received trauma counselling in addition to treatment for their various injuries. Emergency Medical Services indicated on social media that some of the victims of the accident were also transferred to the Mediclinic in Pietermaritzburg for treatment.

Meanwhile, George Themba, who has been charged with culpable homicide will remain in police custody till October 9 says Ngoepe.

The spokesperson of the Mediclinic in Pietermaritzburg and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is yet to comment to OFM News’ questions on the matter.
