Vereeniging - A freak accident between a bakkie and a taxi transporting primary school and high school children claimed the life of a pedestrian on Voortrekker Street in Vereeniging on Monday afternoon.
ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, said the deceased man was declared dead on the scene after sustaining numerous injuries following the crash between the two vehicles.
Meiring told OFM News that 11 scholars and a driver sustained minor to moderate injuries.
“We immediately treated the patients and thereafter transported them to various hospitals in the area for further assessment. The exact cause of this incident is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigation,” he said.
The accident follows a spate of accidents involving school children since the beginning of the year.
Free State Premier, Ace Magashule, said reckless, negligent and illegal drivers would not find peace on the roads this year during his State of the Province Address (SOPA).
Police, Roads, and Transport MEC in the Free State, Sam Mashinini, also called for an excessive road awareness campaign for the safety of transporting schoolchildren.
