As learners approach final examinations, the North West MEC for Education has called on parents to help with school study camps.

Speaking at a session at Victory Primary School in Mahikeng with school governing bodies (SGBs) and ward councillors from underperforming schools on Wednesday (30/10), Viola Mostumi emphasised the importance of parental involvement and community support in improving learner outcomes.

The session aimed to mobilise parents, community members, and SGBs to provide the necessary manpower for successful study camps, said North West Education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane. The camps are designed to prepare learners for exams, offering a focused environment with additional resources and support.

Motsumi commended the dedication of SGB members, noting despite limited parental support, many have demonstrated commitment to assist. She urged members to expand their roles beyond administrative duties and to support teaching and learning efforts actively.

The need for SGB participation in departmental programmes and community involvement was also emphasised. “I urge every SGB member to prioritise the learners’ best interests above all else. We need SGBs that are committed to fostering a curriculum that truly supports our learners.

“When we launched the Last Push campaign in September, we called on all stakeholders, including parents, to rally behind our candidates. Now, we need to act on this campaign, knowing that it truly takes a village to raise a child.”

According to Molokwane the Department is particularly encouraged by the commitment shown by newly-elected SGBs in schools facing performance challenges. “Their involvement will be instrumental in ensuring we meet our educational objectives for the year.”
