“The market also aims to foster cultural awareness and promote the understanding of the university’s cultural diversity.”

The University will host its second annual cultural night market to showcase the various rich cultures and heritages found in South Africa.

The market, at the Centenary Complex on the main campus, will be open from 15h00 to 23h00.

“The market will feature food, drinks, and culturally themed items for sale. A key highlight will be the student-led cultural performances celebrating Heritage Month. The event primarily targets students, with a focus on cultural enrichment and awareness,” said Event Organiser, Bhekumusa Zikhali

The event will be held outdoors, with a detailed ground plan to be provided for participants and attendees.

The market also aims to foster cultural awareness and promote the understanding of the university's cultural diversity.

“The 2024 International Cultural Diversity Festival (ICDF) aims to celebrate and promote appreciation for the various cultures within the university. Through a dynamic and interactive space, it fosters cultural expression, artistic performance, and information sharing. The event will be held as the ICDF Culture Night Market on the Bloemfontein Campus, featuring a vibrant mix of music, dance, and food stalls representing diverse cultures,” added Zikhali.

'This year the market will feature a national headliner'

The market also plans on having special performances by student artists such as Step Up and Dance winners from the residences Beyers and Outeniqua; Legatum; Akasia and Roosmaryn, the singing group Lilongwe, the dance crew Koded Blvck, and various culturally based student associations. This year the market will feature a national headliner through the assistance of Urban Brand Augmentors, one of the great amapiano vocalists Nia Pearl.

“The event is organised by the Office for International Affairs in collaboration with various student associations under the Arts and Culture Council in the Department of Student Affairs.”

The event seeks to encourage student entrepreneurship as one of the vendors to be at the market started as a student and had his business on the side and has now become a great success.
