"The Health MEC, we want to wish you well and guarantee that you've got our support."

The EFF in the Free State has expressed its support for the newly appointed Health MEC, despite calls for his resignation by ANC Youth League (ANCYL).

ANCYL Chairperson Xolani Tseletsele criticised Monyatso Mahlatsi's appointment, attributing the ANC's poor performance in the past elections to his role as the provincial Secretary of Cosatu. Tseletsele accused Cosatu of destabilising municipalities through marches that compromised service delivery, contributing to the ANC's loss of votes.

"Cosatu was nowhere to be found during elections and was part of the reason the ANC lost some votes," Tseletsele said. He called for Mahlatsi's appointment to be withdrawn, suggesting young legislature member Zama Sigwebela as his replacement.

During a legislature sitting at the fourth chamber of the Raadsaal on Tuesday (9/7), EFF provincial chairperson Mapheule Liphoko commended Mahlatsi for his swift response and assistance to patients during the recent fire at the National District Hospital.

"The Health MEC, we want to wish you well and guarantee that you've got our support. We heard there are rumors here. What you did there is very good, visiting our people. You've got our support, especially after being able to go to such dangerous conditions," Liphoko said.

Liphoko urged the newly appointed Education MEC to introduce heaters in schools to keep learners warm during the winter. He emphasised the cold weather affects not only farmers but also poor people, urging residents to prioritise safety when keeping warm to prevent the loss of crops, houses, and other belongings.
