Engo: A legacy of care and compassion in the Free State | News Article

For over a century, Engo has been a cornerstone of care and support in the Free State, making a tangible difference in the lives of thousands.

Pulane Nel-Sekepe spoke to De Wet Claassens, Chief Executive Director of Engo Free State, about Nashua’s annual golf day, which took place on 13 March 2025.

As a non-profit welfare organisation, Engo provides essential services across six specialised sub-programmes, each dedicated to caring for vulnerable children, families, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities.

Comprehensive Care for the Most Vulnerable

Engo’s work is far-reaching, ensuring that those in need receive the necessary support and guidance to lead dignified lives. Here’s how Engo is changing lives every day:

  • Child and Youth Care Centres: With 33 centres across the Free State, Engo provides a safe and nurturing environment for between 700 and 800 children who have been removed from their homes by the Children’s Court. These centres offer stability, education, and emotional support to help children build a better future.

  • Family Care Offices: Through 10 dedicated family care offices, Engo reaches nearly 43,000 people annually. These offices provide much-needed social services, helping struggling families navigate crises and access resources for a brighter tomorrow.

  • Centres for Disabled Individuals: Engo operates two care centres in Viljoenskroon and Bethlehem, offering daily support to 35 individuals with disabilities. These centres provide specialised care, therapy, and a sense of belonging to those who need it most.

  • Aged Care Services: With 20 facilities dedicated to elderly care – including independent living schemes, frail care, and two dementia units – Engo serves approximately 2,700 elderly individuals. These centres offer a safe and supportive environment where senior citizens can enjoy a high quality of life.

  • Hospital Ministry Services: Engo provides spiritual and emotional support through face-to-face ministry in Bloemfontein hospitals. This service has also expanded online, reaching more than 26,000 people who need comfort and guidance during difficult times.

  • Adoption Services: With a deep commitment to securing loving homes for children in need, Engo facilitates the adoption process, ensuring that adoptable children find permanent, supportive families.
