“The court ruled that she failed to prove any exceptional circumstance for her to be granted bail.”
The North West woman charged with murder and insurance fraud has been denied bail by the Molopo Magistrate’s Court in Mmabatho. She will be back in court on Thursday, 28 March for further investigations.
Agnes Setshwantsho appeared on Friday (19/1) for a judgment on her bail application. She faces a charge of murder, two of fraud, and one of defeating the ends of justice.
“Investigations have revealed that the suspect fraudulently took out insurance, on behalf of her relative before her murder,” said North West NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame. “Police are conducting further investigations, possibly adding more charges against the accused.”

“We are glad that the court agreed with us that the accused failed to provide any exceptional circumstances for bail to be granted, we are also grateful that the court shared the same sentiments that she may evade court.”
“She also knows who the state witnesses are which may lead to interference. Our focus will now be on completing investigations to prepare for trial.”
After an investigation by the police and an insurance company it was discovered that Setshwantsho had reportedly killed her relatives to profit from insurance claims, she was arrested on Thursday, 16 November. It is alleged that she is the beneficiary of 58 insurance policies from her extended family.

The investigating team linked Setshwantsho to this case after a tip-off was received from her relatives and through investigations and evidence, including an exhumation of two bodies.
“Investigations are still underway regarding the alleged death threats against the state witness as well as the investigating officer,” said Mamothame. “The accused will remain in police custody until the matter is concluded.”
