The Free State Cricket has offered its condolences to the families of Nqoyi and Molefi who died in an accident over the weekend.

The CEO of Free State Cricket, Johan van Heerden, said it is extremely sad to lose such talent. Lerato Nqoyi and Thapelo Molefi were travelling to Odendaalsrus for work commitments when they were involved in an accident. “It is unbelievable that they passed away at such a young age, I can’t start to imagine what their loved ones, family, and friends are going through.”

Van Heerden said they believe God will put His hands around the families to get them through this difficult time.

Nqoyi and Molefi were from the Free State Cricket Academy and CUT Cricket Club respectively. The two had received a contract to do broadcasting for Supersport at the Free State Netballs final on 17 June 2023.

“They have been involved in cricket for some time now, they were very promising boys and very keen on sports,” stated Van Heerden. “Ngoyi has been part of the academy and his debut in the 2021/2022 cricket season in the province happened while he was with us at the academy.”

Maokeng County Cricket Club has joined the academy in offering its condolences. “It is with profound sadness that we have to announce the untimely passing of two County players, Molefi and Nqoyi. They both represented the club with distinction. The club is saddened that their declaration came so early, they both still had so much to offer. Rest in peace, the club will miss you!” read their Facebook post.

Buti Rantheti also posted how heartbroken he is after the passing of the two boys. “The two boys we saw growing up in Maokeng, both excelled playing cricket, both did the best with their lives. Now both are gone. As Sports Coaches it is hurting, we take kids and teach them life through SPORTS and when we expect them to take care of their families, to take care of other upcoming Talent ... then sad news happens. May your beautiful and humble souls rest in eternal peace boys.”
