Arrive Alive: North West MEC Lehari activates Easter plans – VIDEO─── 11:04 Thu, 06 Apr 2023
The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, activated road safety plans ahead of Easter at the Alpha Crossing in Brits in Madibeng.
The campaign started on Wednesday to ensure fewer road fatalities as traffic is expected to increase over the long weekend.
Lehari ordered law enforcement officers to apply regulations to reduce accidents. He said plans are in place and must be used to decrease fatalities during this long weekend.
The departmental spokesperson, Alpheus Koonyaditse, said road fatalities in December were reduced by 21% due to the presence of law enforcement officers on the roads.
Arterial routes such as the N4, N14, N18 and N12 are expected to carry the bulk of traffic, however, Lehari indicated that there is a growing trend of horrific accidents in rural areas. As a result, the department said law enforcement will also be deployed in rural areas.
Kool said the long-term remedial action plan by MEC Lehari is to strengthen law enforcement with a specialised unit to ensure compliance.
