MEC offers condolences after Vyfhoek tragedy─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 15:07 Fri, 19 Aug 2022
The MEC for Education in North West, Mmaphefo Matsemela, has offered her condolences to the families that have been impacted by Thursday's road traffic accident at the Vyfhoek Primary School in Potchefstroom.
According to Russel Meiring of ER24, one of the emergency medical service providers who attended the scene, they responded to an emergency at the school, which is situated next to the N12, approximately 10km outside of Potchefstroom, after a truck crashed through the fence and came to a stop in the parking area.
"On arrival, medics found the truck parked near several small container buildings. Upon closer inspection, medics found three children lying under the truck while several others were around the vehicle."
The children were believed to be aged between 7 and 11.
"Medics quickly assessed the patients and found four children had shown no signs of life. Three other children were in critical condition, while two others had severe injuries. Medics treated the patients and provided them with advanced life support. Unfortunately, after a short time, one critically injured child succumbed to their injuries," explained Meiring.

Matsemela bemoaned the incident, stating it was "the most devastating news to share".
"Losing five learners in this manner is not easy to accept. As a parent and as a caretaker of these learners, I wish to send a word of comfort to the bereaved families and for those whose children have been hospitalised,” she said.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the North West Department of Education, Elias Malindi, confirmed to OFM News that there was no truth to the rumours that the death toll had increased from five to seven.
"At the moment, the death toll stands at five as reported earlier and there are still four learners who are hospitalised."
Malindi, in a media statement, explained that four learners are in hospital and in due time, a report on their condition will be issued.
The incident occurred on Thursday, shortly after the school came out when learners were waiting for their school transport after school within the school premises. It is alleged that the driver of the truck lost control after a tyre burst.
