The ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) in the Free State has suspended the former mayor of the cash-strapped Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality and chief whip in the Provincial Legislature.
The IPC spokesperson, Oupa Khoabane, tells OFM News that Vusi Tshabalala is accused of supporting independent candidates for the upcoming local government elections.
He says Tshabalala's suspension from the ANC's activities is in line with the call by the community of the Free State for improvement in services delivered by different spheres of government.
Khoabane says the party has since appointed the former disbanded Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) spokesperson, Thabo Meeko of the ANC, to act as the chief whip until after disciplinary action against Tshabalala.
Meanwhile, OFM News recently reported that Premier Sisi Ntombela fired former Police, Roads and Transport MEC, Sam Mashinini, who is also a staunch supporter of the suspended ANC Secretary-General (SG), Ace Magashule.
"We furthermore welcome the reshuffling of the Executive Council by the Premier. We hope and believe that comrades, given the responsibility to lead different portfolios, will discharge their mandate with the utmost responsibility and tenacity.
"The ANC in the province has intensified the election campaign by visiting different areas en masse as part of assessing organisational strength and challenges," Khoabane adds.
He says the party is confident that the general populace still regards the ANC as the hope to change their lives.
"The ANC Free State believes that these recent developments shall go a long way in improving the work of ANC deployees to improve the lives of the people," Khoabane further adds.
In 2018, 16 ANC councillors voted with opposition parties to remove Tshabalala in a motion of no confidence after accusing him of corruption. Some of these councillors were later expelled by the ANC.
