Five arrested in NC for copper cable theft, vandalism─── 12:30 Sat, 07 Aug 2021
The Northern Cape's Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit (Hawks) has arrested five suspects on Friday following copper cable theft and damaging of infrastructure worth R3.6 million.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, five suspects aged between 29 and 43 have been detained at the Kimberley Police Station after 52kg of copper cables were recovered.
Mnisi said that the copper cables were stolen in April 2021 at Ekapa Minerals Ltd (Pty) properties, which is also known as stadium dumps in Kimberley. Essential infrastructure that supply mines with water, were left extensively damaged.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 10 August 2021.
