FS police stop alleged robbery plans dead in the water─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 12:00 Tue, 06 Jul 2021
Free State police have managed to thwart rumoured plans by a group of four men to commit robberies in various towns falling under the Lejweleputswa District Municipality.
Provincial police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says the group was arrested near Hennenman on Monday 5 July, at 22:00, by members of Welkom’s Tactical Response Team (TRT) following a tip-off on the planned robberies. The suspects, who are between the ages of 27 and 34 years old, were en route to Hennenman from Virginia in a Grey Hyundai Getz when they were stopped and searched by the police.
Mbambo says authorities found two firearms with serial numbers removed as well as ammunition in the vehicle. None of the accused could produce valid licences for the firearms and as such were apprehended. They are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in connection with the unlicensed weapons. It is unknown if authorities have any tangible evidence to charge the accused for the planned robberies.
Police have, however, confiscated the weapons and the vehicle for further investigations.
