Second group of gang members expected in Welkom court | News Article

A total of seven men, alleged to belong to a gang called the “Al Qaeda”, are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in Welkom in the Free State today.

This follows after a 69-year-old woman was murdered and three other people were attacked at a house in Bronville earlier this week. The police spokesperson, Motantshi Makhele, added that the house was allegedly ransacked and cell phones were also stolen.

Makhele earlier said a total of 15 rival gang members were initially arrested for charges including murder, arson and malicious damage to property. This allegedly includes eight Al Qaeda gang members and seven from the IJP gang.

Six suspects who allegedly belong to the IJP appeared in this court yesterday. Their case was postponed to 24 March 2020 for bail applications and they remain in custody.

Two people were released by the police during investigations as they could not be linked to the cases.

“We suspect this is revenge [after another] incident because according to our investigation, there was a house burnt by the Al Qaeda gang where some of the inhabitants were alleged to be IJP members. As a result, we say this might have been an act of revenge,” Makhele said earlier this week.
