NWU student contracts meningitis─── 15:00 Tue, 22 Oct 2019
A fourth-year student at the North-West University’s (NWU) Potchefstroom campus has contracted bacterial meningitis.
NWU spokesperson, Bertie Jacobs, tells OFM News the student is currently receiving treatment from a local hospital in the city and is doing well. The unidentified student presented symptoms on Monday, after which he was admitted to hospital.
Jacobs says NWU has contacted and informed all the people who were in contact with the student on campus, and they are each being monitored closely. He says so far, none of them appear to have any symptoms, making the incident an isolated one. The student does not live at any one of the institution’s residences, says Jacobs. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Daryl Balia, urges the university’s staff and students to not panic. Balia says they are managing the situation and will keep everyone informed of any developments in the matter.
