South Africa is in high need of a leadership that is guided by the will of its people, and that has structures in place to redress the imbalances of the past.

This is according to Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng. Delivering a lecture on Transformative Constitutionalism at the University of the Free State on Friday.

Mogoeng, highlighted that South Africa is not only grappling with high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality but also suffers from a government that is not putting the interest of its people at the forefront.

He alluded that the country is in dire need of a government that is accountable, responsible and transparent in all its dealings in order to tackle its many socio-economic issues - including issues relating to state capture. Mogoeng’s statements comes at a time when the country is reeling from allegations of maladministration and rampant corruption as revealed at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry led by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

“Transformation demands that there be a government based on the will of the people. South Africa needs visionary leaders who are ethical and courageous. Leaders who have not fallen in love with money, prestige, power, and fame,” said Mogoeng.

With regard to the mounting questions about donations allegedly received by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the ones that went towards President Cyril Ramaphosa’s presidential campaign in 2017, Mogoeng said there should not be a direct funding towards law enforcement agencies nor to individuals in positions of power, and that those who will like to made donations should rather pay more tax.
