Members of the opposition parties in the Free State Legislature have appealed to all members who took oath of office to pull up their socks.
Leaders of the DA, the EFF and the Freedom Front Plus have urged Premier Sisi Ntombela, new Speaker of the house Zanele Sifuba and her deputy Lucy Mapena as well as the new Chief Whip Vusi Tshabalala to serve with integrity in their positions and deliver on the promises they made to members of the public.
This, after they were elected during the first sitting of the house on Wednesday. The DA’s Roy Jankielsohn has further made use of the platform to remind Tshabalala, who is the former Mayor of the cash-strapped Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality, to take heed of the purpose of the legislature and execute his duties with diligence.
Tshabalala has in the past years drawn much controversy with oppositions and some members of the public attributing the municipality’s financial troubles to him. Of all the Free State municipalities that owe Eskom over R7.8 billion, Maluti-A-Phofung accounts for the highest bill, amounting to more than R2.8 billion. It also owes its water board more than R1.2 billion.
