Viljoenskroon protestors set to appear in court | News Article

The 24 people who have been arrested in the Free State during special voting on Tuesday are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

This, after they were allegedly involved in the unrest that led to a community hall in Viljoenskroon being set alight. The hall was used as a voting station and a local clinic. It is alleged residents in this farming town were up in arms over a lack of service delivery and vowed to disrupt elections. Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, however, told OFM News all their forces are on the ground and they are keeping a close eye on all the areas where there have been sporadic protests.

The IEC's spokesperson in the Free State, Mmabatho Rasengane, confirmed that security measures are being beefed up in Viljoenskroon and other towns such as Marquard and Kroonstad where there have been threats of protests.

Rasengane confirmed that besides their furniture, no ballot boxes and other voting material were affected during the torching of the Viljoenskroon community hall.
