Weird Wide Web - SA vigilante nicknamed "John Wick"─── 15:20 Thu, 04 Nov 2021
A rumored vigilante in South Africa has earned the nickname 'John Wick' and been hailed as a 'hero' by local residents. However, police say the evidence so far does not suggest the killings are the work of a lone gunman...
In an article on ladbible.com, "Members of the Boko Haram - not affiliated with the terrorist organisation of the same name that operates elsewhere in Africa - began to be assassinated in August. However, not everyone who has been killed is confirmed to have gang affiliations."
The story of "John Wick" first made news around social media circles a month back, with residents of Mamelodi township in Pretoria, hailing him as much need help in curbing the plight of gangsterism and gang violence in the township.
The story became so big, that it got pick up by numerous news houses and ended up on news channel eNCA, in a segment called Crime in SA.
News website Timeslive also recently reported on this story: "Police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili said preliminary investigations on the scene identified the deceased as 35-year-old Phillip Given Mnguni. A task team found Mnguni was allegedly linked to several cases related to the Boko Haram gang in Mamelodi. Mamelodi West community policing forum chairperson Tebogo Mashigo told EWN last week that many in the community hailed 'John Wick' as a hero."
Since the breaking of the story, many social media users have weighed in on the topic, with some, like the residents of Mamelodi hailing him a hero.
However, not everyone believes he is what the community needs, instead, he too is a problem, just like the gangsters he is ridding the community of. More on this story can be found here.
On a lighter note, South African film and television producer Ofentse Mwase, has created a series of videos, based on the real John Wick but with his own South African twist.
