“The accumulations of a lot more experiences like that in stadiums like that have allowed me to be more comfortable playing in that type of environment. So I kind of just rode the wave of that comfort I guess.”

The defending men's singles champion, Carlos Alcaraz, is into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

On Sunday the Spanish star beat Ugo Humbert of France 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 and 7-5 to advance. The world number one, Jannik Sinner, in turn beat Ben Shelton of the USA 6-2, 6-4 and 7-6 to reach the last eight.

The 12th seeded Tommy Paul of the USA dispatched Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain with a 6-2, 7-6 and 6-2 win, while the 5th seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia advanced after leading Grigor Dimitrov 5-3. Dimitrov pulled out of the contest with an injury.

In the women's singles there was another big upset with the 19th seeded Emma Navarro knocking out her American compatriot and second seed, Coco Gauff, with a 6-4 and 6-3 win.

Navarro said countless hours of hard work are starting to pay off.

“I've kind of been way more comfortable playing on that stage than I would have thought I would have felt,” said Navarro.

“The accumulations of a lot more experiences like that in stadiums like that have allowed me to be more comfortable playing in that type of environment.

“So I kind of just rode the wave of that comfort I guess.”

Meanwhile, Britain's Emma Raducanu was knocked out with a 6-2, 5-7 and 6-2 defeat to Lulu Sun of New Zealand.

The French Open finalist, Jasmine Paolini, in turn mounted a massive comeback in the second set against Madison Keys to advance with a 6-3, 6-7 and 5-5 win. Keys retired injured in the third and final set to see the Italian advance.

Donna Vekic in turn beat Paula Badosa of Spain 6-2, 1-6 and 6-4.
